If you want to reach more people online and you don’t have a blog, podcast, or YouTube channel, things can get a whole lot better for you. There’s a whole other world outside of social media if you are willing to expand beyond Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, etc. Could it be that God is calling you to take your business, your ministry to the next level?

With that said, there are many options to choose from when getting started online. Should you start with a blog? Or perhaps a podcast? Then of course there is YouTube…

In this blog post I’m going to give you many reasons why I think starting a blog is the best choice when you’re just getting started online. Podcasts and YouTube channels are great, but to be straightforward, they will take more time to set up and do properly. Starting with a Blog is for many the best choice when taking the next step forward in building their platform and reaching more people with their message. If you’ve been thinking about starting a blog, please keep reading.

Blogs require the least amount of money to start

Podcasts and YouTube Channels require equipment. Other than a computer, (which you would need anyway to do a podcast or YouTube channel) you don’t need to purchase any additional equipment. You will need a website of some kind to host your blog. I recommend having your own website for your blog but it is not absolutely necessary.

If you’re on a really tight budget, you can actually start a blog completely free. There are web sites such as WordPress.com and Blogger.com. For the first several years that I was blogging I was using WordPress.com

If you’re really serious and ready to take your business or ministry to a whole other level, a free blog might not be the best for you. There are a lot of limitations to free blogs including no selling of products allowed. Their mentality is that they are not charging you so you shouldn’t be charging your readers anything. If you just want to start small and you’re not looking to to make any money from your blog, then this can be a good option, at least to start with.

Editing

Although it does take time to edit a blog, there’s still more time involved in editing a podcast. And editing videos can take A LOT of time. This is something worth considering if you’re pressed for time. Blogs will take the least amount of time although podcasts are a close second. Building a successful YouTube channel will require a greater investment of time, money, and resources.

Blog content is easier to share through social media

Podcast or YouTube videos that are shared inside Facebook generally don’t perform very well. I can share a blog post in Facebook and get five or six likes. I can share a YouTube video I found that has had millions of views and get maybe one like. It’s much easier to share directly from a blog to Social media because there are many good social sharing WordPress plugins that make it very easy for your reader to share.

Blogs are more popular

People are searching “how to start a blog” more than “how to start a podcast” or “how to start a YouTube channel.” When people are thinking about starting a new platform, more people consider starting a blog. Most businesses today will have some kind of blog on their website, but not necessarily would they have a podcast or YouTube channel.

Blogs can be integrated into a website easily

If you have a website you almost have a blog. With a few clicks of a button, in 5 or 10 minutes you can have your first blog post. Podcast or YouTube channels however require many other additional steps. Furthermore, there are additional costs involved  – especially with podcasting. Podcasts require separate hosting that can cost between $9 to $29 per month on average. Most podcast hosts do offer a very small unlimited free plan; however for me personally I don’t want to be so limited with what I can do. YouTube will require setting up a YouTube channel. If you want to be a serious YouTuber, then you will also need to invest in a good camera, microphone, lights, and video editing software program.

For many people blogging is just easier. They would much prefer to write than to talk or being in a video. Most people have experience writing more than talking into a microphone or in front of a camera.

Blogs don’t require a quiet environment or a special set up

Blogs can be written in your pajamas, if you are tired, have a sore throat, etc. It doesn’t matter if there is any background noise (kids screaming) etc. With a podcast you need a quiet background and a good healthy voice. Video is even more challenging because you need to prepare yourself, dress better, etc. You also need a good background setup with good lighting.

In summary, I believe starting a blog is the best way to get started online, especially when choosing between a blog, podcast, or a YouTube channel. With that said, it’s very common for more established businesses and ministries to have all three. If you have the resources, if you have the desire, if you have the calling to do it, then by all means get your message out to as many platforms as possible and reach as many people your message as you can. It is recommended to start with one, get good at it, find some good assistants, and then expand. Blogging is a great first step to building your platform online.
